Outdoor Pursuits News & Events Outdoor Pursuits News Bromley Outdoor Group is a
local adventure group who run social and outdoor pursuit activities
for those over 18. With around 30 regulars the club is buoyant and
now expanding its publicity effort onto the internet to recruit more
new faces to go places ! Most walks are 6 -10 miles. You'll need decent
waterproofs, a water bottle and good walking boots - that's a minimum. Historic Records .. covering years 2004 to 2008 2004 A highly successful club
cycling trip to the flat agricultural landscape of Wrangle in Lincolnshire
took place in early
July. A mixed bag of weather but good exercise once we had
mended
those
punctures !! Lovely castles including Alnwick - where they filmed Harry Potter's broom flying lessons. Just made it to the Farne Islands when the wind abated aboard the MV Golden Gate. We visited the famous Longstone lighthouse - now managed remotely from Harwich (times change eh..). Plenty of seal colonies, gannets wheeling and diving, cormorants nesting - truly a lovely set of tiny islands. Beautiful Bamburgh with Armstrong's aero museum, Lindisfarne castle on Holy Island (too windy to stand up on the top balcony!!) and Cragside House which has a magnificent rock garden and early automation from the Victorian era. All in all worth the 360 miles
of driving and a fair bit of fuel. An excellent New Year trip albeit a bit windy to Llangranog in Wales - fireworks at a real Welsh barn dance, blustery conditons on the coast path, plenty of mud but pretty decent scenery and much bird life up on the sheer cliffs. Thanks go to Pat for organising.
Enjoyed Biggin Hill airshow
from the valley opposite on Sunday 4th and 4 of us picked blackberries
and found a pub on the day before. Jam hot ! A cold, misty murky walk to Shoreham on Jan 8th was enjoyed by 3 hardy members ! Thanks
to Brian for an excellent ramble around Sevenoaks on Jan 15th. Spotted a little owl on the
Hawes trip. Mixed bag of weather. Shelter at top of Great Shunner Fell
seen in hail ! Boiling hot trip to a nearby lake.. Saw the Wensleydale
cheese being hand made. A very strenuous but enjoyeable walk from Faversham (flooded) to Whitstable was enjoyed by 4 and a tail end Charlie.. Pleasant ramble on the 24th September saw us walking to Edenbridge where a sumptuous lunch was enjoyed by all at the Crown.
The end of September saw us on the Kent Walk and attending the 'death' of Kemsing YH - cheers, YHA. That's just what a potential World Heritage Site needs - to lose their closest Youth Hostel to Downe House of Darwin fame.. Sunny walk to Halstead where a long wait proved worthwhile at the local
pub in early Oct. Excellent time was had by all who went to Wadebridge in North Cornwall - plenty of stormy seas, windy cliffs and spectacular Atlantic views. Some hired bikes and completed the off road Camel Trail (25 miles) plus walked up to Padstow.... along the way saw much bird life. Snakes and much else besides at Minsmere RSPB over Easter - stayed at Blaxhall Youth Hostel. Lawrence 'heard' a bittern, honest. A fun and educational time was had by the people who went to Goathland in Yorkshire this May - home of Heartbeat !! Watched 2 days of interesting filming, walked the NY Moors and went on the NYMR steam railway (Hogwarts station in the Harry Potter films). Hot one at Biggin Hill on 2nd June - 24 degrees and no shade whatsover ! Excellent trip to the Lee Valley for August Bank Holiday and lovely walk from Cheshunt to Ware - canal locks, house boats, a grass snake and plenty of bird life. Ramble to Cobham was interesting - restoring a monument near Cobham Park and visited a pub mentioned in Dickens - Pickwick Papers. New Year was spent at Barbrook
near Exmoor. Plenty of wind 'n rain plus visits to no less than 2 steam
lines (for our train buffs). Pretty Lynmouth and Lynton but where were
all the people ? Does anyone live there apart from the postie ?! We
stayed in the old sawmills building so we had a piece of history right
under our feet so to speak.. Rewarding visit to lovely Brading village on the Isle of Wight. Saw red squirrels close up, walked some coast path, rode on a few steam trains and went to Osbourne House.
