Outdoor Pursuits News

Bromley Outdoor Group is a local adventure group who run social and outdoor pursuit activities for those over 18. With around 30 regulars the club is buoyant and now expanding its publicity effort onto the internet to recruit more new faces to go places ! Most walks are 6 -10 miles. You'll need decent waterproofs, a water bottle and good walking boots - that's a minimum.

The group has a varied outdoor programme to suit all tastes. Please email us for a current programnme of events.

2004

A highly successful club cycling trip to the flat agricultural landscape of Wrangle in Lincolnshire took place in early July. A mixed bag of weather but good exercise once we had mended those punctures !!
*
Ted hosted a trip to start sections of the North Downs Way - so 10 + people enjoyed the first part Sunday (1st Aug) in baking hot sun. Well done all those brave souls that faced the Indian summer. I gather the views were absolutely stunning.
*
Bank Holiday trip to Polegate was a mixed bag of weather but a great little Bar-B-Que was organised by Roger & Barbara.
*
A fantastic trip was enjoyed by all who braved the windy Northumberland seashore and the old fishing village of Seahouses.

Lovely castles including Alnwick - where they filmed Harry Potter's broom flying lessons. Just made it to the Farne Islands when the wind abated aboard the MV Golden Gate. We visited the famous Longstone lighthouse - now managed remotely from Harwich (times change eh..). Plenty of seal colonies, gannets wheeling and diving, cormorants nesting - truly a lovely set of tiny islands.

Beautiful Bamburgh with Armstrong's aero museum, Lindisfarne castle on Holy Island (too windy to stand up on the top balcony!!) and Cragside House which has a magnificent rock garden and early automation from the Victorian era.

All in all worth the 360 miles of driving and a fair bit of fuel.
*
Thanks to Michael for hosting the AGM.
*
Beautiful 'stylish' dinner at Medway for the Xmas 2004 dinner.

Medway dinner on 11 Dec 2004

An excellent New Year trip albeit a bit windy to Llangranog in Wales - fireworks at a real Welsh barn dance, blustery conditons on the coast path, plenty of mud but pretty decent scenery and much bird life up on the sheer cliffs. Thanks go to Pat for organising.

New Year Trip at Llangranog
Halloween Ghouls
Halloween Nosh !

A good time was enjoyed by all who went to Teignmouth for the long Easter break- including 2 steam railway trips, a trip down the River Dart, Buckfast Abbey and plenty of coastal walks.
*
Superb trip to Northumberland - tons of wild life and hundreds of puffins, cormorants, shags, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, fulmars and grey seals.
*
Excellent working party in Blackboys village.

*
Festival of the Sea proved popular at Portsmouth as did trips to Great Dixter House and Finchcocks House and Music Museum. 'Ted 's crew' completed more sections of the North Downs Way.
*
Good camping trip recently to Oxfordshire near Henley - thanks to Christina..

Camping near Bodiam Castle
Ramble - Horton Kirby. Darenth Valley, Kent

Enjoyed Biggin Hill airshow from the valley opposite on Sunday 4th and 4 of us picked blackberries and found a pub on the day before. Jam hot !
*
Great and sunny trip to the Malverns Hills.
*
Excellent ramble on Sunday and on Saturday when we visited Hall Place.....
*
Lovely Indian summer rambles, autumn colours on our recent walks. A successful Halloween Party at Alan's took place recently and Trish's garden got a makeover. Michael hosted a very noisy fireworks party..
*
In Blackboys village the atmosphere was that of Xmas and much celebration for the club's Xmas meal.
*
Very successful New Years Trip to Cornwall.

2006

A cold, misty murky walk to Shoreham on Jan 8th was enjoyed by 3 hardy members !

Thanks to Brian for an excellent ramble around Sevenoaks on Jan 15th.

Maria hosted a very enjoyable stroll round Chislehurst and John round Oldbury Hill in late Jan.

Chilly damp Sunday walk to Westerham 2nd weekend of February.

Spotted a little owl on the Hawes trip. Mixed bag of weather. Shelter at top of Great Shunner Fell seen in hail ! Boiling hot trip to a nearby lake.. Saw the Wensleydale cheese being hand made.

Sizzled at the Biggin Hill Air Fair 2006 - 85,000 attended the event which was sponsored by the History Channel.

A soggy walk on Wimbledon Final and World Cup Day to the Change of Horses PH in Farnborough, Kent.

A very strenuous but enjoyeable walk from Faversham (flooded) to Whitstable was enjoyed by 4 and a tail end Charlie..

Pleasant ramble on the 24th September saw us walking to Edenbridge where a sumptuous lunch was enjoyed by all at the Crown.

Kent Walk 2006

The end of September saw us on the Kent Walk and attending the 'death' of Kemsing YH - cheers, YHA. That's just what a potential World Heritage Site needs - to lose their closest Youth Hostel to Downe House of Darwin fame..

Sunny walk to Halstead where a long wait proved worthwhile at the local pub in early Oct.

Damp walk to Knockholt and a friendly welcome at the Tally Ho.

Enjoyed a soggy and muddy walk along the Downs near Trottiscliffe (Vigo village) on Dec 17th.

2007

Excellent time was had by all who went to Wadebridge in North Cornwall - plenty of stormy seas, windy cliffs and spectacular Atlantic views. Some hired bikes and completed the off road Camel Trail (25 miles) plus walked up to Padstow.... along the way saw much bird life.

Snakes and much else besides at Minsmere RSPB over Easter - stayed at Blaxhall Youth Hostel. Lawrence 'heard' a bittern, honest.

A fun and educational time was had by the people who went to Goathland in Yorkshire this May - home of Heartbeat !! Watched 2 days of interesting filming, walked the NY Moors and went on the NYMR steam railway (Hogwarts station in the Harry Potter films).

Hot one at Biggin Hill on 2nd June - 24 degrees and no shade whatsover !

Excellent trip to the Lee Valley for August Bank Holiday and lovely walk from Cheshunt to Ware - canal locks, house boats, a grass snake and plenty of bird life.

Ramble to Cobham was interesting - restoring a monument near Cobham Park and visited a pub mentioned in Dickens - Pickwick Papers.

2008

New Year was spent at Barbrook near Exmoor. Plenty of wind 'n rain plus visits to no less than 2 steam lines (for our train buffs). Pretty Lynmouth and Lynton but where were all the people ? Does anyone live there apart from the postie ?! We stayed in the old sawmills building so we had a piece of history right under our feet so to speak..

Plenty of rambles including a visit to Emmetts House (National Trust) to see a mass of beautiful bluebells and Coolings Nature Trail at Knockholt, Cobham Park (monument looking much better!), Ashdown Forest,

May Day was spent at Scotney Castle with loads more bluebells.. Pat is recovering well after sliding down a section of the North Downs Way none too gracefully.

Camping at Biddenden was fruitful including flypasts by the Battle of Britain fighters and an evening

The Anglesey trip in June was a great success. Lovely place right up high and overlooking the coast.

Rewarding visit to lovely Brading village on the Isle of Wight. Saw red squirrels close up, walked some coast path, rode on a few steam trains and went to Osbourne House.
